Bulk rubbish collection
Last weekend we put things out on the kerb for the local council’s bulk waste collection. They’ll recycle any white goods and furniture, and dispose of the rest. But that’s only if the stuff lasts long enough for the council to pick it up - usually people will take things to re-use them before the council even gets there! On Sunday afternoon there were people lingering in the street, checking what was put out and trying to be first to the good stuff. I wish I’d taken a photo…
I’m not sure I’d ever pick up stuff from the side of the street to use in my own house - I’m happier contributing to the ‘donating’ side of the re-use equation
We put out a desk, a washing basket, a working VCR, a working computer monitor, some folding chairs and some stuff that actually is junk. A couple of hours later, only the folding chairs and the junk were left. We probably could have Freecycled most of it, but that requires more effort than just putting it out on the kerb. It’s a win-win-win situation - we got rid of things that were unwanted and unneeded in our home, someone else scored some furniture for free, and the environment benefits because landfill doesn’t get filled up so quickly.

I am one of the collectors
I love to see what people put on the verge, there is some really nice stuff there which is easy to repare or redesign so we often come home with something, last thing scored was an as good as new Weber bbq in a groovy eithties color.

Ooh, a bbq is a good score! A relative of mine does the same - I think it’s a bit like op-shopping, there’s a knack to spotting the good stuff hiding in among the dodgy stuff.

Got something yesterday from the Swanbourne area, don’t know what it is, but our cats did! It is a funny shape rattan thing which could have been a table base or so, but the cat’s fit in the top and bottom parts
And it looks good on the patio!
