Happy new year!
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful bunch of Christmas and New Year celebrations with your family and friends.
A lot of people are posting their New Year’s Resolutions, including all of us greenies. I’ve decided that this year I’m not going to make resolutions, or set goals, or any of that. I’m taking a different approach this year, and picking a word to focus on. I got the idea from Eilleen at Consumption Rebellion, who has chosen to focus on “Celebrate” this year.
For me, it’s going to be “Reduce”, the first word of that common environmentalist mantra. That means reducing waste, reducing energy and water use, reducing stress and simplifying my life in general.
The first step might be to reduce the amount of clutter in my spare room cupboard! But I just want a word to focus on when I have to make decisions, or face a new temptation to go down that path of easy over-consumption.
Apart from that, I’ve got a lot of hopes for 2010…
- I hope we get a proper emissions trading scheme through parliament
- I hope that when our world leaders get together again in Mexico in a few months, they build upon the shaky beginnings we’ve got for an international climate change agreement
- I hope everyone stays safe through bushfire and flood season
- I hope more people will embrace a greener lifestyle and stop trying to keep up with those stressed-out, credit-maxed-out Joneses
- I hope I can find a decent pair of eco-friendly shoes!
How about you? What do you hope for this year? What are you aiming for in your life?

Reduce is a good word. Mine is Wellbeing.
On my recent visit over to your side of the country I was surprised by how many of those “stressed-out, credit-maxed-out Joneses” exist in Perth now. I found it really depressing.
hear hear re the eco friendly shoes!!! I was lucky to get some great as new second hand shoes a year ago but they are fast wearing out.
Belated Happy New year
Wellbeing is a great choice – can be interpreted broadly too!
Because of the mining boom that’s been going for a decade now, I don’t think the recession’s hit Perth as hard as elsewhere. Lots of people who are all cashed up and have no idea what to do with their spare money or time, sadly.
