Taking a break…

It’s been pretty quiet here at Go Greener Oz lately, hasn’t it? I took a long break over Christmas and New Year’s, which was a well-earned rest.

It made me realise that I need a little break from regular blogging and public green commitments. I want to spend more time working on personal projects for a few months – installing water-saving devices, maybe (finally?!) getting a bike, and little things like that. And I need to spend more time on my day job – I’ve recently completed an online course at the University of South Australia, and have a lot of programming to learn still! All these things eat into time I would normally spend researching, writing and editing my posts.

So you won’t be hearing much from me for the next while, at least not here. I’ll still be reading all your blogs and tweets and am always happy to answer email if there’s anything I can help you with.

If you need some eco-friendly reading, I heartily recommend The Greening of Gavin, Little Eco Footprints, and G Magazine.

In the meanwhile, I hope you’ll all keep trying new eco-friendly things and keep an eye on environmental issues in your neighbourhood. I’ll leave you with a pic of our summer vegie patch for now – click on it to see the full version.

Wishing you many good things and good times, and with big hugs for everybody,

Julie G

Perth Green Drinks: October

We had a great time at the Green Drinks meetup this week – it was lovely to see some new faces as some of our regulars couldn’t make it. Jonathon from Carnegie Wave Energy told us about their experimental wave power stations at Fremantle and Garden Island, which was really interesting.

You can see more photos at our Facebook page, and ‘like’ us if you want to get notice of our events in your news stream.

As always, a big thankyou to Central Institute of Technology, our sponsors.

Perth Green Drinks 2012
I had hoped to co-ordinate our group for a few years, but the workload in my day job is increasing and I’d like to find someone else to take on the group next year. It’s a fun job, easy to organise, and you get to meet lots of really great people. I’ll miss doing it! If you’re interested in what’s involved in helping local sustainability people connect with each other, come and chat with me on the 4th.

Last night’s Green Drinks

We had a few new people last night, and I’m glad we put on a good show for them.

Professor Kingsley Dixon had a fascinating talk about botannical extinction rates in WA (not good!); showed some of our amazing wildflowers, carnivorous plants and parasitic plants – I had no idea the Christmas Tree with orange flowers is a parasite plant; and filled us in on some of the really innovative conservation work Kings Park is doing for our biological hotspot.

You can see more photos on our Facebook page – please note that we had a lot of food left over last night so we need more people to come along and eat it :)

Tuesday’s Perth Green Drinks

We had a great night at the new Central Institute building, in spite of a bit of a technical hitch at the beginning. We had quite a few new people too. It’s great to see new faces, I hope we’ll see you again soon :)

Once again I’ve forgotten to take many photos. I’ll have to get you all to remind me next time!

Eugenie Stockmann showed us her vision for small urban communities with her project The Green Swing. And Tim Barling from Sustainable Energy Now showed us how much potential there is for clean energy in WA – we’ve got the best sun and wind, and tidal power up north, plus a bit of room for geothermal too.
